"I'm a firm believer in goal setting. Step by step. I can't see any other way of accomplishing anything." - Michael Jordan
"Setting goals for your game is an art. The trick is in setting them at the right level, neither too low nor too high. A good goal should be lofty enough to inspire hard work, yet realistic enough to provide solid hope of attainment."- golfer Greg Norman
Believe in the power of your dream. To create the future you wish to live in follow the A.C.T. formula.
Goal Setting is the principal skill for personal growth and peak performance.
Use the SMART formula to set attainable goals.
Specific
One must zero in on the task or area of needed improvement. The goal cannot be vague or too ambiguous. I want to be fit in two months is too obscure as a goal statement. Currently, I can do 20 push ups in 60 seconds. I am going to do high repetition upper body strength training exercises twice a week and in two months I plan to pump out 30 push ups in 60 seconds. A statement such as this has a specific goal of improving upper body strength.
Measurable
One must be able to determine if and when the goal has been achieved. Gauging your achievements must not be a subjective interpretation. A universally excepted unit of measurement must be used to measure the accomplishment (sec, kg, cm, etc.). 30 push ups in 60 seconds is a perfect example.
Action Oriented
Many people concentrate on the outcome; but, it is the process, the journey that is important. The goal of 30 push ups in 60 seconds is all many think about. In order to make the outcome a reality, one must take consistent action. The statement: "I am going to do high repetition upper body strength training exercises twice a week," is process oriented. How I train today will make me a champion tomorrow.
Realistic
The key is to tackle moderately difficult tasks attached to a reasonable time frame of achieving that goal. "In two months I am going to do 100 push ups in 60 seconds," is too difficult to achieve if you can currently do 20 push ups. You will only set yourself up for failure.
Timely
One must have clearly defined time constraints attached to their goals. A goal is a dream with a deadline. Every goal needs a target date for completion. As well, the time frame the goal is to be achieved must be reasonable. Two months to do an additional 10 push ups is ideal.
