I typically recommend to my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students to stand up when they are fighting from the guard. Doing so keeps them safe from some of the most common BJJ submissions such are guillotine chokes, triangle chokes and kimuras. The recourse for the person on the bottom is to transition into Spider Guard. The hook sweep from the spider guard is a simple yet effective BJJ technique.
