3 Ways To Take The Back

Getting the Back Position in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most important positions to achieve but it’s one of the most difficult positions to get.

Here’s three highly effective ways for Bjj Beginners to take the Back from Butterfly Guard.

The Butterfly Guard is one of the safest and most practical Guard Positions and it’s ideal for Bjj beginners since it’ll prevent them from getting smashed.

The first way to get the back from Butterfly Guard is by attaining a 2 on 1 grip. This is where I have my right hand on his right sleeve and my left hand on his right arm pit grip. My arm pit grip then transitions into a belt grip. Once I have the sleeve grip and the belt grip, I can lift Stephan up with my Butterfly hooks. By lifting Stephan up and by dropping my left hook, I can force Stephan to rotate thus exposing his back. I now shrimp away so I can find room to insert my left hook to secure the back position.

The next way to win the back from the Butterfly Guard is with the Arm Drag. My left hand controls his right wrist while my right hand controls his right tricep. I now pull Stephan down as I pull myself up. I can now climb up Stephan’s back to insert my left hook to secure the back.

The final way to get the back from the Butterfly Guard is with the Duck Under. This is where I start with Double Under Hooks on Stephan and then I pick him up with my Butterfly hooks. Once Stephan’s hands are on the ground, I can duck my head under his right shoulder and then start to climb up to win his back.

This was 3 simple and effective ways to take the Back from Butterfly Guard.
