While there are many mistakes that Boxers and Kickboxers make when throwing the Uppercut. Here are the 3 most common mistakes that you’ll see again and again. Keep these mistakes in mind the next time you’re sparring and training so that you’ll be sure to side step these pitfalls and get better faster.
Mistake #1: Dropping Your Hand for the Uppercut.
If you’re throwing the Uppercut with your left hand, a common mistake is to bring your left hand down to your knee to load up the punch first. This is a horrible mistake. You’re essentially leaving yourself wide open for an easy counter attack by your opponent. Furthermore, you’re limiting the punching power to just your one arm. You want to punch with your legs, torso and shoulders. The correct thing to do is to keep your hand to you chin and drop your shoulder down to load up the power.
Mistake #2: Shoulders Square To The Floor
While many Boxers and Kickboxers will correctly drop their hips down to generate power for their Uppercut. They commonly neglect to turn their shoulders vertical so that they can rotate into the punch. By keeping your shoulders square to the floor, you’re mistakingly only using your arms to generate power for the uppercut. Be sure to turn your shoulders vertical to maximize the power of your Uppercut.
Mistake #3: Flaring Your Elbow Up
If you’re throwing a left Uppercut, a common mistake is to flare your right elbow up as a means to generate more power. While it’s true that you’ll probably get more power on your left Uppercut by flaring your right elbow up; unfortunately, you’ll be opening yourself up to an easy counter attack. Keep your right hand up and keep your right elbow tucked to your ribs and you’ll be much safer!
